Sapporo Snow Festival 2011

For everyone who can't get to see this festival - here we are.
I am NOT one of those Sapporo-ites who sniffs:" Snow Festival? Nah...only for tourists...".
I really love the fact that this is all happening in the park near home and right outside NHK Culture Center, where I teach Tuesdays and Thursdays.
If you were on holiday and this was happening in a city near your hotel, you would go and see it for sure - but somehow people who live here get all snooty about it.

ENJOY!!!!

  2. Thanks for that, I needed a cool change! we have 30+ C heat with about 90% humidity at the moment.
I know what you mean about not taking full advantage of the things happening around you, we just get lazy sometimes I guess. Carole.

  3. Wow! Great pictures.

I went to the snow festival once when I lived in Otaru. It was amazing, so I'd never laugh at non-tourists for going.

    How cold was it?

  4. Thanks for sharing! I love Sazae-san, it's so good! I'd love to go one day. Can you believe my husband is from Hokkaido and I've *never* been to Sapporo? haha...we always just go past on the train, the closest I've been is shin-sapporo station!

  6. I can sort of understand why locals get a little sensitive about things like Yuki Matsuri... due to the number of tourists that go... but, as the end of the day, it's a nice (though chilly) festival that everyone can enjoy.

It most probably is a little over-rated, but still, if you've got the chance, you'd be silly not to pop in.

I wish I could be over there at the moment. Were there any really cool (sorry) sculptures there?

  7. The dinosaurs were cool - I tried very hard to get the big one knashing up the TV Tower, but the subway entrance was in the way....and the Sazae-san family were great too.
There have been some mutterings locally about a "Hokkaido Tourism" large stage and frieze that somehow includes the Great Wall of China....the locals are very grudgingly accepting that Chinese tourists are probably going to keep Hokkaido from sinking into economic abyss...but still...this year there are two famous Chinese structures in the Snow Festival.
