Kitchen Queen (Reprise) (J)

I did it!

I shopped. I came home. I prepared. Okaasan came in from another round of a hard day at the shops - and I served a good dinner. No salt added unnecessarily!

YEAH!

I did grilled fish, miso soup, rice, spinach with fish flakes and some left over burdock and carrot. And Okaasan had bought some pickled raddish. So we ate and chatted about fish and diets and wartime eating and cooking. She chats a lot more in a way when Yujiro isn't there. I sit and nod and give responses...and understand about 70-80% of it.

Then after an hour or so I cleared the table and left her to the washing up. I retreated upstairs to open a bottle of wine and relax.

YES! I can. Maybe.

And I think that maybe at lunchtime Okaasan went out and brought back some food to eat at home - there were some supermarket packets around. Maybe..hopefully she is getting more into the frame of mind of making something...maybe...is that too much to hope?

Dinner for two...plus salt.(J)

Well. Yujiro left me to it. Threw me in the deep end.
He left me alone for the weekend with Okaasan.

OH NO! Oh yes. Oh my god.

His ski race staff job came through and late afternoon he e mailed me to say he'd decided it was best to stay up at the ski school TWO nights...and come home Sunday afternoon.

Shocked and scared. That was my feeling. Only 2 nights after the spaghetti and salt fiasco I was going to have to "do" Okaasan for two meals at least...and talk...and help...etc etc...

But I want Yujiro to have time away from the domestic dramas. He needs guys time drinking beer and talking about skiing. He hasn't had that all winter. And this ultimately is what I've signed up for - when he is away working I will HAVE to feed Okaasan and have a life with her. So, jump in and get on with it.

So I came home from work at 6 pm with a panicky feeling. The house was empty. I hunted round the fridge - trying to decide what to do. This? That? or this? aghhh!!!

I decided on Spanish Omelet, the remains of the shrimp sauce from the spaghetti drama, canned crab salad, rice, miso soup...all doable. Not exciting. But doable. My mother used to make Spanish omelet. I can do this.

Okaasan came home at 6.45 pm. She asked where Yujiro was and seemed ok with the fact that he is : "away working"....

I politely refused her offers of kitchen help and while she watched TV in her living room I put dinner together.

We sat down to it about 7.20 pm. I secretly added more salt to her omelet and salad.
We ate and sat and chatted. Amazingly - she has FINISHED the living room curtain sewing!!!! So I praised her sewing and the sewing topic led on to how she'd sewn military uniforms at school during the war, and how Kawagoe had been spared American bombs and how there wasn't any rice to eat, and how they'd only eaten yams etc etc
We did the same topics quite a few times. She ate the food. Chatted away. Didn't add salt to it. Ate it all. Praised the soup.

Finally at 8.30 pm we'd finished. She started washing plates and I cleared the table. At that point the chair I'd been sitting on fell apart - I guess it was the strain of my nervous excitement or something. (actually I think the leg was wonky before and Yujiro has obviously failed to repair it). But Okaasan and I both had a giggle about it.

Agh. I did it. Dinner at home with just me and Okaasan.
It wasn't great. But it was ok. And she seemed happy enough chatting away with her wartime memories. I've now come upstairs to watch TV with the cat. And I am on my second beer.
This weekend will be an interesting one.

The day after...(J)

Last night after work I caught a subway in the opposite direction to home and went to a friend's apartment - and cried it all out for 2 hours on her sofa.

All the frustration, anger, worries about this whole situation poured out. The salt and responses to my cooking of course is just the trigger - a few months of pent up stuff had to flow.

My friend made me coffee and listened and made sooothing noises and gave gentle advice. I worked my way through her box of tissues. There's nothing like a really good cry to get it all out of your system. And make your eyes puffy and bloodshot.

After 2 hours we went to a restaurant near her apartment and ordered a vast shabu-shabu
(meat and vegetables cooked in a table top broth) course dinner with beer and plum wine and forgot about men and their mothers. It was so good. I drank a lot of beer and laughed a lot and dropped noodles on the table top. Came home on the late subway with hard-working businessmen in their spring coats.

This morning Yujiro and I got up early and didn't talk about yesterday at all. We treated eachother gently and politely.

I suggested our first 2009 early morning walk (this is our habit in no-snow months) and we set off to find the entrance to the park near the house. Tenji-Yama Park is famous for cherry blossoms, but where we live that is all a month away still. Now there is lots of hard, dirty snow. It was a bit dangerous for Yujiro's leg. I held his arm over the dangerous bits. We looked at the shrine and the little ema (wooden boards on which people write their prayers for health, happiness and in this season - exam success). We admired the great views of distant, snowy mountains. It was quiet and sunny and cold. Only us and a few dog walkers.

We walked quietly and forgave eachother for yesterday's dramas.
Came home and put out the trash. I swept up the street round the trash station. He showed off his latest Internet auction purchase.

Onwards.

Food fights.(J)

Yesterday started out well...and ended in tears.

Beautiful sunny day.
We decided to start trying to retrain Okaasan to feed herself at lunchtimes - because now there is a kitchen full of food and even if she doesn't cook, she should be able to find enough things to eat. Since December Yujiro has been cooking lunch for her almost every day - and we agreed it's time to break that routine and free him up. Hopefully he'll start work sometime soon...

He told her: "I'm out this morning, so look after your own mid-day meal ok?" about 10 am.
Then he went out shopping.

I made a 1 pm appointment at my hair salon for Okaasan and after telling her that we'd set out together at 12.30 to walk there I disappeared upstairs to unpack boxes and arrange my new bookshelves. It was sunny, I listened to pop music on YouTube...the cat snoozed in the sun. Happiness!

Around midday Yujiro came back with the shopping. I made ham and cheese sandwiches quickly and we sat down at the kitchen table to eat.

Okaasan drifted into the kitchen.
"Eh, looks delicious. Did I eat? What am I going to eat?"
"Didn't you eat something yet? We told you, look there is food here in the fridge, there is food here in the cupboard."
"Really? Can I eat anything? What should I eat? Is there any rice? etc etc...."

AGHHHHH!!!!!
Yujiro stood up and grabbed an Instant Noodles pack and showed Okaasan how to boil water on the new electric cooker, showed her the instructions on the pack etc. We continued eating, she managed to cook the Instant Noodles - and finally at 12.20 pm she sat down to eat.
I called the hair salon to change the appointment time.

AGHHH. She's a long way off being able to "do" her own midday meal. Even remembering to eat something, never mind something as complex as cooking. But we have to get her into this routine - even if she has some hungry days with not much food. At the very least she can help herself to yogurt, rice crackers, fruit or cup soups. Or does she need public food delivery already? Maybe?

After that I took her to the hair salon and left her there in the care of my hairdresser Hiroshi. We went to our old apartment to return the keys and give goodbye presents to friendly, wonderful neighbors...I felt a little sad to see our old home and street. It reminded me of my old, uncomplicated life...before Okaasan.

In the evening I cooked spaghetti. Added salt of course. Garlic, chilli peppers in the sauce etc. Can't go wrong with spaghetti. Or so I thought. Just in case I put a bottle of soy sauce and the salt pot on the table in front of Okaasan's mat.

Silent eating. Okaasan and Yujiro said a few: "Hmm, delicious"...but not really with any enthusiasm. When he cooks he is lavish in praise about his own cooking (he's that kind of person) and she echoes his enthusiasm.
I made a few sharp/joke/but not-joke comments about being a disappointed Oyome-san...they repeated their polite "hmm, delicious".
Then Okaasan started adding salt on her food. And she added. And again.
FOUR times she sprinkled salt on her spaghetti! Four times!

I wasn't happy. I made comments about her taste ability. She made comments about how Japanese people like salty food. Yujiro was in the middle.

NOT a happy family dinner!
Afterwards she washed up the dishes. Yujiro and I had a tense, whispered Calm Down conversation in the utility room. My insides were churning with frustration and anger.

I don't care how much salt she puts on her food really. She's already 76 and she can eat unhealthy food if she wants. And of course the four times is probably because she's forgotten that she's already added it.

I guess what really really gets me is that I would love there to be some happiness at the table when I'VE cooked!. I'm not a great cook. But I'm not a bad cook. I would love the feeling at the table to be celebration...not silent, critical eating.

Late last night I sent an e mail to a friend and made escape plans for dinner tonight. I'll meet her after work and go out to dinner with her. I don't want to be here tonight.

Is this my life? For the next 10 years or more. Grudging thanks for my dinners? Surpressed rage? The old: "Japanese people like salt" conversations.
I crave more than this.
